APOSTILLE AND TRANSLATION OF FOREIGN DOCUMENTS

For ‘D’ type visa applications, long-term national visa, some foreign documents (i.e. not issued by Italian institution, a body governed by public law or a university) must be translated into Italian and ‘apostilled’ or legalized . The “Apostille” is a simplified form of legalization that serves to give legal value to a foreign act (such as a diploma) to make it usable in another country. The translations of the qualifications and other documents that may be requested by a university must be made by translators accredited by the Consulate General of Italy in Moscow, whose signatures, after the translation, must be recognized as authentic by the consulate. The translation can also be performed by a notary and in this case no other translation is required.

NOTE: not all documents must be apostillated, but all main documents must generally be translated into Italian, unless they were issued in English. Universities often ask students for a ‘Declaration of value’ of their qualification and this declaration is issued by the Consulate only if the title has previously been apostilled and translated. To obtain this declaration, if requested by your university, after the completion of the apostille and translation process you can refer to the Italian Visa Center in Moscow.
