INTRODUCTION TO THE APPLICATION FOR A UNIVERSITY STUDY VISA
Starting from the academic year 2020-21 pre-enrolment to a university in Italy must be made online, without intervention by the Italian Cultural Institute (excep for the AFAM). The student who intends to register must therefore access the “UNIVERSITALY” portal and fill in the “pre-registration request” electronically. Once the procedure is completed and confirmation of one’s admission (validation) is obtained, the student will print the application and, if requested by the chosen university, will begin to legalize and translate the documents according to the procedure described here: APOSTILLE AND TRANSLATION OF FOREIGN DOCUMENTS
The steps to be followed in summary are these: 1. online pre-registration through the UNIVERSITALY portal; 2. printout of the summary of the application; 3. apostille and translation of the qualification (or other document) according to the university’s request (it is not necessary to translate documents originally issued in English); 4. legalization of the translations; 5. request of the declaration of value, if necessary according to the results of the online pre-enrollment procedure; 6. collection of all the remaining documents and submission of the visa application to the VMS for obtaining the student visa.
For complete information on higher education in Italy it is possible to consult the website of the Ministry of the Italian University, and in particular the circular letter on the procedures for the entry, stay and enrolment of foreign students in higher education courses in Italy.

(Institutes of advanced artistic training, music and dance), Higher schools for linguistic mediators (SSML), Specialization institutes in Psychotherapy, or to follow a post-diploma technical specialization course organized by an advanced technical institute (ITS). These students must follow the classic non-online procedure described below.
COURSES AT INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER ARTISTIC, MUSICAL
AND DANCE EDUCATION (AFAM). GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
To enter a Diploma accademico di primo livello course or a Diploma accademico di secondo livello course, offered by a AFAM, the on line procedure of “pre-enrolment application” through the website ‘UNIVERSITALY‘ will be available only starting from the academic year 2021-2022. This means that a student interested in these courses will have to follow the classic non-online procedure of preenrollment by contacting the Italian Institute of Culture.
The list of courses available and the corresponding quota of reserved places for each AFAM can be consulted here.
Any question related to the prerequisites and the procedure to access these courses must be addressed to the AFAM involved or to the Italian Institute of Culture. This procedure usually imply the authentication of a photo and of one’s signature on the ‘FORM A bis’ (downloadable here, and sometimes a declaration of value of one’s qualification by the consulate (for info).
